Ayurvedic Asava and Arishta: Nature’s Potent Elixirs

What Are Asava and Arishta?

1. • Asava: 

 These Ayurvedic medicines are prepared through natural fermentation using herbs, water, and sugar. Unlike Arishta, they do not involve the preparation of decoctions.

1. • Arishta:

These special Ayurvedic concoctions are made by soaking herbs (either in dry powder or liquid form) in a solution of jaggery or sugar. They undergo a process called Sandhana kriya (fermentation), which generates alcohol—a natural preservative.

Method of Preparation:
Arishta:

1. • • Coarsely powder the mentioned herbs or drugs (Yavakuta churna).

     • Prepare a decoction (Kashaya/ kwatha) from these herbs.

     • Strain the decoction and keep it in a fermentation vessel.

     • Dissolve jaggery, sugar, or honey (as per the formula) separately, boil, filter, and add to the vessel.

     • Add fine powders of other herbs (Prakshepa Dravyas) and Dhataki Pushpa (if included).

     • Seal the vessel with an earthen lid and place it in a heap of paddy for consistent temperature during fermentation.

     • After the specified period, strain, mix sediments, and bottle the liquid.

Asava:

1. • • Similar to Arishta, but no decoction is prepared.

     • Dissolve jaggery or honey, boil, and filter.

     • Add fine herb powders directly to the jaggery solution.

     • Seal the vessel and follow the same fermentation process as Arishta.
